Does an all-terrain power wheelchair still work for indoor use and everyday errands
It's one of the first questions that comes up when a rugged, off-road-capable wheelchair is on the table: does that outdoor capability come at the cost of indoor agility? Many users picture a heavy-duty all-terrain chair as something built for forest trails but too bulky for a kitchen, a lift, or a narrow shop aisle — which raises an uncomfortable follow-up question. Would this mean owning two chairs, one for outside and one for inside?
Two separate wheelchairs is an expensive, impractical answer to a problem that shouldn't need it. It means two charging routines, two servicing schedules, and constantly switching devices depending on whether the day involves a supermarket trip or a woodland walk — and in practice, very few days split neatly into "outdoor" and "indoor." A morning errand, an afternoon on a trail, an evening at home in a tight bathroom: all in the same day, all needing the same chair to work everywhere.

The dimensions are smaller than they look
The FourX DL looks substantial, because it's built to handle serious terrain. The actual dimensions tell a different story: overall width is 69.5–74.5 cm depending on tyre choice, with an overall length of 115–125 cm. Those figures sit within the same range as many conventional indoor power wheelchairs, and they don't rule out standard doorways or lifts in most homes and public buildings.
The frame is wider than the lightest city-only models, but the gap is smaller than the chair's rugged appearance suggests. The terrain capability described in the previous article on off-road performance hasn't been bought with a wide, clumsy frame — it comes from engineering intelligence, not bulk.
Turning radius is what really matters indoors
More important than width or length in a tight space is turning radius. The FourX's four-wheel steering brings its turning radius down to just 1.15 metres. In practical terms, the chair turns almost on the spot — a decisive advantage in a supermarket aisle, inside a lift, in a narrow hallway, or through a doorway where a rigid two-wheel-steered chair would need to reverse and re-angle itself repeatedly.
Conventional two-wheel-steered chairs typically pivot around the front or rear axle, which swings the opposite end of the chair out in a visible arc. Four-wheel steering brings all four wheels into the turn, so the whole chair rotates more tightly around its own centre. The difference is most obvious in genuinely small spaces — an older bathroom, or a lift sized decades ago for very different equipment.

One button changes how the chair behaves
Beyond the mechanical dimensions, the chair's behaviour itself changes depending on environment. LiNX and R-Net control systems allow the drive profile to be switched with a single button. An indoor profile brings gentler acceleration and more precise steering response, suited to moving close to furniture, people, or shelving. An outdoor profile delivers more power and torque for a climb or soft ground.
That means the same chair behaves differently depending on the situation, without the user needing to learn two separate machines or readjust every time the environment changes. The switch from a forest trail to a supermarket's automatic doors happens at the press of a button, not a change of equipment.
Everyday situations where this shows up
In a supermarket, narrow aisles and queues demand precise manoeuvring around other shoppers and shelving. A tight turning radius means turning at the end of an aisle without reversing and trying again.
In a lift or stairwell, space is often minimum-code. A narrower frame combined with a tight turning radius means the chair fits and turns in spaces designed before current accessibility standards existed.
At home, bathrooms, kitchens and bedroom doorways are usually exactly where centimetres matter most. Switching to an indoor drive profile makes handling noticeably more controlled in precisely these spaces.
At a clinic or assessment centre, corridors and waiting areas tend to be more generous than a home, but still crowded with other people and furniture, where precise control matters just as much as it does at home.
Why the compromise isn't inevitable
The mobility market has traditionally assumed terrain capability and indoor agility sit at opposite ends of a trade-off — that the more rugged and higher-clearance the frame, the clumsier it becomes indoors. The FourX's design pushes back against that assumption through two distinct, deliberate choices: a controlled, relatively narrow overall width, and four-wheel steering that brings turning radius down to a level comparable with much smaller indoor-only chairs.
This is worth raising directly with an occupational therapist or assessor during a needs evaluation: the question isn't only whether a chair meets outdoor and terrain requirements, but also whether it genuinely fits and manoeuvres at home. Both questions can be answered "yes" for the same chair.
Seat height and everyday reach
Beyond overall dimensions, seat height matters for indoor use too. The FourX DL Standard's seat height without cushion is 470–490 mm, comparable to an ordinary chair, which makes transfers from a bed or sofa more straightforward. The Lift model raises this to 540–570 mm with the lift extended, adding reach to kitchen cupboards or shop shelving, while the base seating position stays close to conventional height. Day to day indoors, the chair doesn't feel unusually tall or low next to other furniture and fixtures at home.
One chair, one thing to learn
Instead of two separate devices, one chair means one set of habits to learn, one servicing relationship, and one chair to transport and store. This matters particularly for older users or anyone for whom learning new technology takes time and patience: switching a drive profile with a button is a far smaller step than mastering two completely different machines and switching between them depending on the situation.
For family members and carers, a single chair also simplifies daily life — no remembering which chair is charged, which has been serviced, or which accessory is fitted to which device.
A fair comparison with lightweight indoor chairs
It's worth being honest that the FourX isn't as light or compact as a purpose-built indoor chair, which can weigh a fraction of the FourX's 125–149 kg and may be easier to manoeuvre in an extremely tight space or load into a small vehicle without a hoist. A lightweight indoor chair may also be simpler to store in a small flat. The question isn't which chair is better in absolute terms, but how many environments a single chair can handle well enough. A lightweight indoor chair won't cross wet sand or deep snow at all, while the FourX handles both terrain and most indoor spaces — the trade-off leans toward a chair that works reasonably well everywhere, rather than one that's extremely optimised for a single environment.
A day in the life, from morning to evening
Picture an ordinary day. In the morning, the user moves from bedroom to bathroom to kitchen — tight quarters, several turns in a short space. At midday, there's an errand: a supermarket trip, manoeuvring through aisles and past other shoppers, turning at the checkout. In the afternoon, with good weather, there's a walk on a forest trail, crossing roots and uneven ground. In the evening, the chair returns home and charges overnight. Across that entire day, the chair never changes — only the drive profile adjusts, at the press of a button, to match the setting. That's the practical benefit that a spec sheet alone can't quite convey, but that becomes obvious the moment you follow a single day of real use from start to finish.
